I’ve been meaning to post this painting. It’s a portrait – (finally done and long overdue!) of a friend of mine. PJ is the quintessential cowgirl, the Real Deal. I have ridden with her when I got the chance, and was always amazed at this woman on a horse. Talk about being one with an animal. She raises and trains her own horses, and is also a rancher in some big ranch country, spending all day, many days on horseback over miles of open ground. Yes, the old days still exist in a few places in this world. I am happy to live in one of them.
“The Roots Run Deep” shows PJ in front of her beloved Square Butte, which sits largely on their ranch. Square Butte was often depicted in paintings by the famous Charlie Russell. I hope PJ (and her husband!) will feel I have done her justice here. Of course the first thing any horse person looks at is the horse and saddle (tack). I think I got them right!
