Catching the Last Rays

As western art week begins in Great Falls next week, I thought I would post something besides western art tonight!

I have a love / hate relationship with these little cottontails. Well, it’s mostly love, but I can sure think other things about them when they’re eating my drip line and hoses and causing me lots of trouble! We have lots of the little guys around, maybe hundreds after the babies are born, less at the end of winter when the owls and coyotes have been taking their share. These bunnies live under the porch, under the out buildings, in the barn, everywhere. And after my ranting above,  I do confess that I feed them when we have lots of snow on the ground!

“Catching the Last Rays” is an oil, 9×12 – a size befitting the subject. I had fun painting it!

Oh, and don’t forget to come to Great Falls for the “The Russell” Auction, and  Western Masters Art Show & Auction, both top events in the western art arena! There are quite a few others shows in town at the same time – beginning Wednesday and running through the weekend. I’m in both auctions and have a room – 176, at the Western Masters. Stop by!

About Me

Stevens’ work reflects the small daily wonders of the land she calls home: the first crocus of spring, the resilient beauty of the plains, or that special sense of hope and possibility that is only found in the West. Stevens is also interested in regional history, particularly the interactions of Native Americans and white settlers during the Reservation Period. Many of her paintings are an exploration of this dynamic and a meditation on the “taming of the West.” From Billings, MT, Laurie began her career as an artist in Los Angeles where she spent 12 years working for the entertainment industry as a scenic artist and muralist for television, theme park, theater and movie productions. She spent time as a member of the Walt Disney Imagineering team, lending her talents to many Disney theme park projects worldwide. She also did some set design, illustration, and matte paintings for several animated childrens’ movies. In the 1980’s Stevens returned to her native Montana, first to the mountains near the Scapegoat Wilderness and then to the ranch near Great Falls where she currently lives and works.
